Day -2

Two days until go time! Arrived in Madrid yesterday with a raging head cold. Took a double dose of vitamin C, had a long sleep, and woke feeling much better. Hopefully it will be gone by Friday, my first walking day.

Today I took the 5 1/2 hour train from Madrid to Irun. The light wasn't great for photos, but I managed to get one in the mountains heading into San Sebastián.

Staying at a hotel while here, rather than the albergue peregrino (pilgrim hostel). I originally had planned this to recover from jet lag before I start walking. Now I'm just glad to not be potentially exposing others to my germs. Tomorrow, I'll explore the town, get my pilgrim credential, and buy trekking poles.

Things on my mind:

  • My pack is heavy because I had to prepare for cold, and now the temp is 9 degrees (C) above normal. Worried about the heat and the load.

  • I haven't figured out how to eat here. I've been in transit and keep buying snacks from grocery stores. It's not great. Will try to figure that out tomorrow, too.

  • Because I had to be so stingy about backpack weight when packing, I'm lacking many of my usual amenities. I just washed my hair without conditioner, and with the same soap I used to wash my body. Things just got real!
