Day 2: Hill above San Sebastián to San Sebastián (unplanned rest day)

Ended up with heat rash around the ankles from the warm walk yesterday. It was imperative that I replace the merinos which were making me cook. Had to wait until shops opened at 10 am, so I had a leisurely morning. I woke up at 2:30 am - again - this morning so I appreciated the chance to snooze a bit more from 6:30 to 8. Private albergues let you sleep in. Had toast and coffee for breakfast (more on this later). Walked down the steep hill into town, took a barefoot walk along the beach, then went to Deportivos Ada.

Oh man, I never knew I could love socks so much! The women at Ada were so helpful. I have never before had my feet examined and socks fitted for me. They had done their own Caminos, plus around here there are lots of mountaineers, so they knew what they were doing. My feet are so happy! If you ever decide to walk your own Camino, don't be shy about investing in socks.

After the socks (this town is gorgeous, but they are my hightlight today) I bought a charging cord for my new power bank, then toured around a bit. Explored the beautiful Basilica de Santa Maria del Coro and walked along lovely lanes. Checked into a hotel (some pilgrim!) then found a restaurant for a late lunch where I ordered the meatiest dish I could find because all this walking makes me hungry for protein. I ordered meatballs because they came with a fried egg on the side. An egg! Those who know me know I struggle to get through the day without eggs. So just toast for breakfast? Nope. The egg was divine.

Turns out I needed a rest day anyway. My legs were strong this morning and I was feeling confident and cocky, but after the descent I began feeling first the jet lag, then a tightness in my right hip. I really need to lighten my pack but my first chance to do so isn't until Bilbao. On the other hand, tomorrow is going to much cooler so perhaps I'll appreciate the cold weather gear more then. I tried not to pack non-essentials. I may just need to keep walking and getting stronger.

You can do your own googling for more info about San Sebastián. Here are a few photos from the day.

See the yellow arrow? They pop up just when you need them. Or a helpful human does.

PS Because I bought two pair of socks I'm leaving two pair (which were a few grams heavier, for sure). Minimizing pack weight is no joke. That thing is on your back (and knees, and feet...)!
