Day 3: San Sebastián to Zarautz

24 km today. I left this morning at about 9:15 and arrived just before 5. The weather was cooler, and although there was a lot of climbing, it was not as tough as Day 1 (which is said to be the hardest day). Took a lovely long lunch of the menu del dia in Orio at about 2. Although my hip felt much better this morning, I could still feel it today and had to take it really slow on the descents. So grateful for trekking poles! Overall, it was a day of more ocean scenery and gorgeous countryside. It was a beautiful and peaceful walk. I had long stretches alone, and many other stretches walking near or with other Camino pilgrims.

I won’t go back and list all of the people I’ve met, but here’s a taste of my day, Met Lorenzo (Italian) and Dinae (German) many times along the way and then they showed up at my hostel. Greg and Jo (from Plymouth, UK) that I met and walked with Day 1 are also here and staying in my room. And I brought Sonja (Dutch) and Cristian (Colombian), who I walked with into Zarautz, to the hostel with me.

Zarautz is a really beautiful town. Apparently there are many surf competitions and bike races here in the summer. I arrived at the hostel, showered, hand washed my clothes (with my shampoo bar that I love and use for hair, body, and clothes), then took a walk to the beach. Wowza. I think the beach here is even lovelier than San Sebastián. I sat by the water for a while, then went to Carrefour express to buy some things for dinner. Now I’m relaxing and preparing for tomorrow. Hips, legs, and feet feel good - grateful for that.
