21 km. Sunny and warm. Gentle hills, only 300m of ascents. Mainly walked on country roads and paths through farmlands.
Although the gentler terrain was a huge relief after the last two days, I still felt every slight uphill grade. My legs were pretty tired and I have a new blister. I had a new one yesterday, too, both on the toes of my left foot. Otherwise, the day went smoothly. I ate my menú del día about 10 km in at Martiñan, and one of the options for dessert was Tarta de Abuela! Claudia and I discovered this amazing dessert several days ago and I haven't seen it in a while, so I was pretty happy.
And now some big news: The highlight and star of the day (other than Tarta de Abuela) is…Mark! With about 5 km left to go, I came out of a track onto the main road and was about to turn back off the road onto the next track, when suddenly he jumped out of a car parked on the road. I don't know how he managed to find me, I was only on that road for about 100m, but it was a great surprise and a lot of fun.
To give you some background, before I left on this trip Mark and I had discussed whether he should be in Santiago to celebrate with me when I finish. He could visit his friends Andy and Leire in Bilbao for a few days, then arrange to be there on the day I walk in. He was quite concerned, however, about intruding on my experience. When we finally decided that he would come, he would only do it on the condition that when I arrive in Santiago, I take all the time I need to be alone with the experience before calling him to join me.
As the weeks rolled by, it became clear to me that there would be no intrusion. I have had plenty of 'me' time, and to share the experience with my person, who has championed me the whole way, felt appropriate and fun. So I pitched the idea of Mark walking some of the final days with me. Long story short, although he was enthusiastic about the idea, the logistics became complicated. The plan now is for him to drive ahead and meet me at each destination. If he can manage to organize taxis back to join me for some of the walking, he will.
Mark drove from Bilbao today, so I knew I would see him at the end of the day. I just did not expect him sooner. After several hugs and photos, Mark drove on to Vilalba and checked into the hotel. He was out when I arrived (unsuccessfully trying to find me) so I was able to do my usual routine - stretch, hydrate, and shower - and later we both headed out for food. The Camino provides.
P.S. Days 33 and 34 are now updated. Thanks to all who sent in their guesses regarding which route I took yesterday! I'll send the prizes out as soon as I finish this Camino.
